Description: The photograph shows the front of Saint Raphael Church with several automobiles parked out front. The church has two large bell towers, with one being significantly taller than the other. Saint Raphael Church is located at 225 East High Street, at the corner of Spring Street, in Springfield. Designed by architect Charles A. Cregar, construction on this Gothic style brick building began in 1848. Construction on a very large addition began in 1892, and was officially completed with the dedication in 1898. This historic Roman Catholic church has a 184 foot tower, and a somewhat smaller one holding a 16, 000 pound bell. The stained glass windows, created by Mayer of Munich, were designed in the twelfth-century manner. In 1976, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: St Paul's Roman Catholic Church is located at East Twelfth and Spring Streets, in the St Paul Church Historic District in Cincinnati, Ohio. The brick Romanesque structure has broad Doric pilasters set in its corners and between its tall, round arched windows; above a low-pitched roof is a handsomely proportioned Renaissance tower capped with a Pope's Mitre cupola roof, and a gilded cross. Three arched doorways face the Spring Street side. The district was placed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. The structure was built in 1850, has been renovated and beautified many times. A flash fire destroyed much of the building in 1899, which was reconstructed and completed a year later, in 1900, with a light and cheerful decorative interior. It was closed as a church in 1975. Description: St. John Catholic Church is located at 777 South Main Street in Lima, Ohio. The church began in 1899 when the Bishop gave permission for a parish in South Lima. Land was purchased for $6,200 and a school building was erected on the property in 1901 with Mass being held on the third floor of the building. By 1912, property adjoining the school had been purchased and a the basement for the new church was built. The parishioners worshiped there, in the basement, for 12 years before the church was completed in 1924. This red brick church has two symmetrical towers and a portico supported by 6 Corinthian columns. Above the portico stands a statue, presumably of St. John. Renovations on the church were completed in 1971 and 1990. A new school was built in 1958 (and closed in 1973), and the original demolished in 1959. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Dated ca. 1935-1940, this photograph shows The Chapel of the Holy Spirit, once located at 432 East Fifth Street in Cincinnati, Ohio. The Chapel of the Holy Spirit was a Roman Catholic church that was demolished during the 1980s when Procter & Gamble expanded its headquarters. Built in 1927, the red brick church with a Gothic limestone façade and stone and copper turret, was designed by Edward J. Schulte. Other buildings demolished during the Proctor & Gamble expansion included the Allen Temple, the Fenwick Club, and the Wesley Chapel, once the oldest religious building in the city, having been built in 1831. This photograph is one of the many visual materials collected for use in the Ohio Guide. In 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the Works Progress Administration by executive order to create jobs for the large numbers of unemployed laborers, as well as artists, musicians, actors, and writers. The Federal Arts Program, a sector of the Works Progress Administration, included the Federal Writers’ Project, one of the primary goals of which was to complete the America Guide series, a series of guidebooks for each state which included state history, art, architecture, music, literature, and points of interest to the major cities and tours throughout the state. Work on the Ohio Guide began in 1935 with the publication of several pamphlets and brochures. The Reorganization Act of 1939 consolidated the Works Progress Administration and other agencies into the Federal Works Administration, and the Federal Writers’ Project became the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio. The final product was published in 1940 and went through several editions. The Ohio Guide Collection consists of 4,769 photographs collected for use in Ohio Guide and other publications of the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio from 1935-1939. View on Ohio Memory.
